A Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) event. Windows detected that the GPU took too long to execute a command.

What you may notice

  • Screen freezes for a few seconds, goes black, then recovers
  • Game crashes to desktop
  • Event Viewer logs Event ID 4101

Likely Causes

  • Unstable GPU overclock or undervolt
  • Overheating GPU
  • Buggy driver release

Before changing a driver

Record the exact error code and device name, save open work, and restart the PC once before making a deeper change. Check whether Windows Update or the PC maker has a model-specific package, and create an available restore point before removing software. How to fix it

Step 1: Remove Overclocks

Disable MSI Afterburner or any factory overclocks. Run the card at reference speeds.

Step 2: TDRDelay Registry Tweak

Increase the TdrDelay value in the Windows Registry from 2 seconds to 8 seconds.
