BIOS

Basic Input/Output System. Low-level firmware initializing hardware.
Detailed explanation
The Basic Input/Output System is motherboard firmware that starts before Windows, initializes core hardware, and hands control to the operating-system bootloader. On many PCs the familiar word BIOS is still used even though the machine actually runs modern UEFI firmware. You enter its setup screen with a model-specific key during startup or through Windows recovery options. Firmware updates can add CPU support, correct hardware detection, and resolve low-level compatibility problems that a Windows package cannot reach. They are also higher risk than an ordinary driver change: match the exact motherboard or PC model, keep the machine on reliable power, and never interrupt the flashing process. If Windows already sees the device correctly, check release notes before updating firmware.
