Clean Install

Definition

Completely removing old drivers before installing new ones.

Detailed explanation

A clean installation removes an existing device package and its settings before installing a fresh copy, rather than layering a new release over the old one. It is useful when files are corrupted, components from different versions are mixed, or a normal update repeatedly fails. Start by obtaining the correct signed replacement and creating a restore point. Use the vendor's installer or Device Manager to remove only the affected package, restart when requested, and then install the replacement while unnecessary applications are closed. Specialized cleanup utilities are a last resort for stubborn display-package conflicts, not a routine maintenance step. A clean installation resets customized settings, so record color, audio, network, or performance options you need to restore afterward.
