DEV ID

Definition

Device ID. A 4-digit code identifying the specific hardware model.

Detailed explanation

A device ID is a hexadecimal value that a hardware manufacturer assigns to a particular product or controller. It appears beside the vendor value in the Hardware Ids list in Device Manager—for example, the characters following DEV_ in a PCI identifier. Windows compares this value with the supported-hardware sections inside installed INF files to decide which package can bind to the component. A close product name is not enough: two cards sold under the same family may use different chips and therefore different identifiers. Copy the complete top hardware ID before looking for a manual update, and do not force an INF whose supported list omits your value, because a successful-looking install can still leave the device unable to start.
