DisplayLink

Definition

Technology allowing displays over USB connections.

Detailed explanation

DisplayLink lets Windows treat a USB connection as an additional display path, making it common in universal docks and multi-monitor office setups. The host compresses screen updates in software and sends them to a DisplayLink chip in the dock, so this path behaves differently from a USB-C port that carries native DisplayPort video. A missing or outdated package can produce a black screen, flicker, or a monitor that appears but will not activate. Before reinstalling, disconnect the dock, remove the existing DisplayLink software through Installed apps, reboot, and then install the version recommended by the dock or PC maker. High-motion gaming and color-critical work are better suited to a native graphics output.
