Firmware
Definition
Permanent software programmed into read-only memory.
Detailed explanation
Firmware is low-level software stored on a device itself, such as an SSD, network adapter, dock, or motherboard. It controls how that hardware behaves before and underneath the Windows package that communicates with it. Device Manager and Windows Update may occasionally offer firmware alongside ordinary driver updates, but the two are not interchangeable and firmware usually cannot be rolled back as easily. Apply an update only when its release notes address a problem or requirement relevant to your model. Keep laptops connected to mains power, close active workloads, confirm the exact hardware revision, and never interrupt the process. A failed flash can leave the device unable to start even though Windows itself remains healthy.
