Registry

Definition

Hierarchical database storing Windows settings and driver configs.

Detailed explanation

The Windows Registry stores operating-system and device configuration in structured keys and values. INF files and installers use it to register services, class settings, package paths, and per-device parameters. Advanced instructions sometimes ask users to edit these values with Registry Editor, but a typo in a service or filter entry can prevent a device—or Windows itself—from starting. Before changing anything, export the specific key and create a restore point. Prefer Device Manager, a vendor control panel, or a supported command when one exists, because those tools validate values and update related settings together. If an edit causes trouble, restore the saved key or use System Restore rather than making further speculative changes.
