SYS File
Definition
System file containing compiled kernel-mode driver code.
Detailed explanation
A .sys file commonly contains a Windows kernel-mode component or device driver and usually resides under C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Service entries in the Registry tell Windows when and how to load it. Because this code can run with high privilege, a corrupted, incompatible, or malicious file may cause a blue-screen stop or prevent startup. If a crash record names a .sys file, identify the owning package through file properties, Device Manager, or the vendor rather than deleting the file manually. Roll back or uninstall the associated package through supported tools. System File Checker can repair protected Microsoft files, but it does not replace every third-party hardware file.
