Frequently asked questions
Factual context about drivers, package terminology, status messages, and how this information-only site works.
Driver basics
What is a driver?
A driver is a small piece of software that acts as a translator between your operating system and a specific piece of hardware. When Windows needs to send audio data to your sound card, or display a frame via your GPU, it calls the driver, which converts that request into commands the hardware understands. Without the correct driver the hardware either won't appear in Device Manager at all, or it will sit under 'Unknown Device' and do nothing useful.
Does a newer driver version always mean better performance?
No. Version numbers identify releases; they do not measure performance or compatibility for every device. A release can add hardware IDs, address documented behavior, change packaging, or support a newer operating-system build while offering no material difference to another configuration.
What is the difference between a WHQL and a DCH driver?
WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) refers to Microsoft’s compatibility testing and signing program. DCH (Declarative, Componentized, Hardware Support Apps) describes a Windows driver packaging model that separates the base package from optional applications. The terms describe different attributes and are not competing quality grades.
What does the driver version shown by Windows represent?
The Driver tab in Device Manager reports metadata for the package currently bound to a device, including provider, date, and version. Publishers use different version schemes, and the displayed date may be a ranking value rather than the day every file was produced.
What is DDU?
Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is an independent third-party utility designed to remove display-driver files, services, packages, and settings. It is not part of Windows and is not produced by GPU manufacturers. DriverUpdateMax defines the term but does not offer a DDU procedure or assess whether it is appropriate for an individual PC.
Finding the right driver
Why can the same component have several driver sources?
Windows Update, an OEM, and a component maker can publish related packages with different validation scopes. An OEM package may include model-specific power or feature integration, while a component maker may cover a wider controller family. Our topic navigator filters articles only; it does not identify hardware or select a source.
Can I use Windows Update to get drivers?
Yes. Windows Update distributes drivers selected through hardware identifiers, ranking rules, publisher submissions, and Microsoft’s servicing policies. Its catalog can differ from a manufacturer’s catalog in release timing, optional applications, and model-specific customization.
What is the difference between a 32-bit and 64-bit driver?
Kernel-mode driver architecture must match the operating system architecture. An x64 edition of Windows uses x64 kernel drivers; 32-bit applications are a separate compatibility matter and do not make 32-bit kernel drivers loadable on x64 Windows.
Why is my hardware not listed in the topic navigator?
The navigator matches editorial category and operating-system tags, not a complete device database. A missing result means only that no published article has both tags. The driver directory, glossary, and search index provide broader ways to browse the reference.
Security and downloads
Do you host the driver files?
No. DriverUpdateMax does not provide download links, re-host, repackage, or proxy driver binaries. Our guides explain how to identify the appropriate official support route and verify a package before installation.
What is a 'Driver Updater' program?
It is software that inventories devices and proposes packages from a catalog operated by its publisher. Catalog provenance, hardware matching, disclosures, and bundled software vary by product. DriverUpdateMax does not provide, rank, endorse, or evaluate individual updater utilities.
What do a digital signature and SHA-256 hash establish?
A valid digital signature links signed content to a certificate and indicates whether that content changed after signing. A SHA-256 hash is a content fingerprint that can be compared with a publisher’s stated value. Neither one independently establishes model compatibility or the suitability of a release.
How do restore points and driver rollback differ?
A restore point records selected system state, while Device Manager rollback refers to rebinding a device to a previously retained driver package. WinRE is a separate recovery environment. Availability and scope differ, so these terms should not be treated as interchangeable.
Understanding common status messages
What does 'Code 43: Windows has stopped this device' mean?
Code 43 means Windows stopped a device because the device or its driver reported a problem. It is a broad status category seen across device types. The code alone does not distinguish package state, firmware, power, connection, thermal conditions, or physical hardware.
Why can audio features change after a Windows update?
An update can bind an audio device to a package with a different extension, service, or companion application. Base playback may remain available while OEM enhancements such as Dolby Atmos, DTS processing, jack detection, or control-panel features differ.
Why can a Wi-Fi adapter disappear after sleep?
Sleep and resume cross several layers: firmware power states, bus enumeration, the network driver, and Windows power policy. A missing adapter after resume is therefore a symptom shared by multiple causes, not proof of a driver defect or a particular setting.
About this site
Is DriverUpdateMax affiliated with any hardware manufacturer?
DriverUpdateMax is not an official site for Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Realtek, Qualcomm, Microsoft, or another hardware or software company. Product names are used for identification and technical commentary; their appearance does not imply endorsement or affiliation.
How do I report a mistake or broken link?
The Report a broken link page lists the editorial email address. A useful report identifies the DriverUpdateMax URL, the statement or link at issue, and any public source that documents the discrepancy. Reports do not receive a guaranteed response or correction deadline.
