Chipset

Definition

The motherboard controllers managing communication between CPU and peripherals.

Detailed explanation

The chipset and its supporting platform controllers connect the processor to USB ports, storage controllers, audio buses, power management, and many onboard devices. Windows may show these pieces separately under System devices rather than as one item named chipset. The platform package supplies INF information and controller software that lets Windows identify those paths and manage power correctly. It is particularly important after a clean installation, when missing serial-bus or storage-controller support can make attached devices appear broken. Obtain the package for the exact motherboard or laptop model, install it before troubleshooting dependent touchpads or sensors, and reboot when requested so the controller bindings are rebuilt cleanly.
