Device Manager

Definition

Windows control panel applet to view and control attached hardware.

Detailed explanation

Device Manager is a built-in Windows console reachable by pressing Win+X and selecting it from the menu, or by running devmgmt.msc. It lists every piece of hardware Windows has detected, grouped by category, and shows a yellow warning symbol next to a device whose driver is missing or has reported an error. Right-clicking a device gives you options to update, roll back, disable, or uninstall its software. The status code shown under Device status—such as Code 43 or Code 10—is the most reliable starting point when a peripheral stops working, since it comes directly from Windows or the device rather than from a secondary application.
