PCIe

Definition

Peripheral Component Interconnect Express. High-speed bus standard.

Detailed explanation

PCI Express is the internal connection used by graphics cards, NVMe storage, network adapters, and many expansion devices. Both slots and devices advertise a generation and lane width, then negotiate the fastest combination they share. A card can operate in a physically larger slot with fewer active lanes, but its available bandwidth may be lower. If a newly installed device is absent, shut the PC down, disconnect power, and reseat it before changing software. Then check firmware settings and Device Manager for an unknown controller. A package update can improve how the device uses the bus, but it cannot turn a limited slot into a faster one. Consult the motherboard manual because some slots share lanes with storage connectors.
