How to clean-install audio drivers after a Windows upgrade

Crackling or missing audio after a Windows upgrade usually traces to leftover driver pieces. Remove the old audio stack and reinstall it clean.

A big Windows upgrade often leaves the sound stack in a strange half-state: crackling playback, audio that cuts out, or a device that simply disappears from the volume menu. What survived the upgrade is usually a mix of old and new driver pieces that no longer agree with each other. Layering another driver on top just adds to the pile. The reliable cure is to remove the audio driver completely, clear out hidden leftovers, and let a single clean driver take over. These steps rebuild the sound stack from scratch and get playback steady again.

    Set a restore point first

    Audio work means removing drivers, so give yourself a way back. Press the Windows key, type Create a restore point, and open the System Properties dialog. Confirm protection is on for your system drive, then click Create and name the point something like Before audio cleanup. If sound goes fully silent partway through, you can return here in minutes rather than troubleshooting a dead device. This one-minute safeguard is worth it because the next steps deliberately strip the current driver out, and a clean rollback point removes the risk of ending up worse off than when you started.

    Uninstall the audio device with its driver

    Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager, then expand Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click your audio device, often named for a Realtek or Intel codec, and choose Uninstall device. Crucially, tick the box that says Delete the driver software for this device before confirming; without it, Windows keeps the old files and the crackle usually survives. Removing the driver, not just the device entry, is the whole point of a clean install. Once it's uninstalled, don't reboot yet, because there are hidden leftovers to clear first so they can't reattach when Windows restarts.

    Reveal and remove hidden leftovers

    Old upgrades leave ghost audio devices that stay invisible until you ask for them. In Device Manager, open the View menu and choose Show hidden devices. Expand Sound, video and game controllers and also Audio inputs and outputs; any greyed-out entries are leftovers from previous drivers or removed hardware. Right-click each faded audio entry and uninstall it, again ticking the option to delete driver software when it appears. Clearing these stragglers is what separates a true clean install from a cosmetic one, because a hidden stale device can grab control of playback and reintroduce the exact crackling you're trying to eliminate.

    Let Windows re-detect the hardware

    With the driver and its leftovers gone, restart the PC. On boot, Windows detects the audio hardware and installs a fresh, matched driver on its own, which for many systems is enough to restore clean sound. Give it a minute after login to finish, then check the speaker icon in the taskbar for your output device. Test playback with any short clip and listen for the crackle. If audio is clear and stable now, you're done and there's no need to add the manufacturer's package on top. If sound is still missing or rough, move on to installing the OEM driver deliberately.

    Install the OEM package only if needed

    Some laptops and motherboards rely on vendor audio features, such as enhancement panels or specific codec support, that the generic Windows driver doesn't provide. If Windows re-detection left you without full sound, get the audio driver from your laptop or motherboard maker's official support page for your exact model. Download only from that official source and steer clear of third-party driver sites, which often push mismatched versions that recreate the problem. Install the package, then reboot again so it takes cleanly. Installing the OEM driver as a deliberate final layer, over a stack you already cleaned, is very different from piling it onto old files.

    Set the correct default playback device

    After a driver swap, Windows sometimes routes sound to the wrong endpoint, so you hear nothing even though the driver is fine. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose Sound settings. Under Output, pick the device you actually use, whether built-in speakers, a headset, or an HDMI display. Click into the device to check its volume and format. If several devices are listed, disable ones you never use to stop Windows switching to them automatically. Setting the right default endpoint is a quick check that resolves plenty of no-sound reports that look like driver failures but are really just misrouted output.

    Verify playback and check for errors

    Confirm the fix under real conditions: play music, then a video, then a system sound, listening for crackle, dropouts, or lag. Adjust the sample rate in the device's advanced properties if audio sounds off, since a mismatched format can cause artifacts. If trouble lingers, open Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, and scan the System log for audio service or driver errors around playback time; the entry often names the component at fault. Should the crackle return after a later update, your restore point and the noted driver source give you a fast, known path back to clean sound.
