How to Safely Update BIOS / UEFI

A BIOS/UEFI update can fix memory and stability issues — or brick a board if done wrong. Preparation steps, safety rules, and a calm walkthrough.

A firmware update can be the thing that finally stops your memory from crashing or gets a new CPU recognized. It can also turn a working motherboard into a paperweight if the process is interrupted at the wrong moment. That gap between real benefit and real risk is exactly why this task deserves a slow, deliberate approach rather than a quick click. The following steps walk you through checking what you already have, deciding whether the update is worth it, protecting against power loss, flashing safely, and confirming everything afterward.

    Find your current firmware version

    Start by knowing what you're running so you don't flash the same version or an older one. Open the Start menu, type msinfo32, and press Enter to open System Information. On the System Summary page, read the BIOS Version/Date line and the BaseBoard Product line, which is your motherboard model. Write both down exactly. You'll compare the version number against what the manufacturer publishes, and you'll need the precise board model to find the correct firmware file. Grabbing firmware for a similar-but-different model is one of the most common ways people damage a board, so verify the model twice.

    Read the release notes before deciding

    Not every update is for you. On the motherboard vendor's official support page, each firmware release lists what it changes: memory compatibility, CPU support, security fixes, or bug corrections. Read those notes and ask whether any of them address a problem you actually have. If your system is stable and nothing on the list applies, the safest choice is often to leave the firmware alone. If a note matches your exact issue, such as instability with your memory kit, that's a strong reason to proceed. Updating firmware purely to be on the newest number invites risk for no benefit.

    Guard against power loss

    A firmware flash writes to a chip that must not lose power mid-write. On a desktop, make sure the PC is on a stable outlet and, if you have one, an uninterruptible power supply. On a laptop, plug in the charger and confirm the battery is well charged; many laptops refuse to flash below a set battery level for exactly this reason. Close every other program, pause any background updates, and don't plan to use the machine for anything else during the process. The goal is a quiet, uninterrupted window where nothing competes for power or attention.

    Prepare the update media correctly

    Most modern boards flash from within the firmware's own built-in updater, which is far safer than a Windows-based tool. Get the exact firmware file for your verified board model from the manufacturer's official support page, and read whether they require a specific USB drive format, usually FAT32. Copy only the firmware file (and any renaming the vendor specifies) onto a freshly formatted USB stick. Don't rename it to guess; follow the vendor's instructions letter for letter. Having the right file on properly formatted media before you reboot means you're not improvising once you're inside the firmware screen.

    Flash from the firmware screen

    Restart and enter firmware setup by tapping the key shown briefly at boot, commonly Delete or F2. Locate the built-in update utility, which vendors name things like EZ Flash, M-Flash, or Q-Flash depending on the brand. Select your USB drive, choose the firmware file, and confirm. The tool will verify the file, then write it and reboot on its own, sometimes more than once. Watch the screen and let it finish completely. Some boards also offer flashing without a CPU installed via a dedicated button; use that only if the vendor's notes describe it for your model.

    Never interrupt the write

    Once the flash begins, do absolutely nothing. Don't press keys, don't unplug the USB drive, don't cut power, and don't panic if the screen goes black or the system restarts several times; multiple reboots are normal. Interrupting a write is the single most likely way to corrupt the firmware and leave the board unbootable. If your board has a recovery feature like BIOS FlashBack or dual BIOS, know it exists as a safety net, but never rely on it as a reason to be careless. Patience here is the whole job.

    Check your settings afterward

    A firmware update usually resets everything to defaults, so your previous tuning is gone. After the final reboot, enter setup again and confirm the essentials: the correct boot drive is first in the boot order, the SATA or NVMe mode matches how Windows was installed (leave it as it was to avoid boot failures), and any memory profile like XMP or EXPO is re-enabled if you used one. Save and exit, then boot into Windows and open msinfo32 to verify the new BIOS version is showing. Finally, confirm your hardware and stability behave as expected over the next day.
