Bluetooth Pairing and Connection States

How discovery, authentication, stored bonds, radio firmware, profiles, and Windows services create the states users see as pairing.

Bluetooth “paired” and “connected” are not synonyms. Pairing creates a trusted relationship, while profile connections are established when a service is needed.

Discovery and identity

Advertising packets expose addresses, names, and supported capabilities. Privacy addressing can rotate visible addresses while identity keys maintain recognition. Windows stores device containers that can combine Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy functions.

Topic 2

Bonding and profiles

Authentication produces link keys or long-term keys stored on both peers. Audio, HID, battery, serial, and other profiles then establish separate logical connections. One profile can fail while the bond and other profiles remain valid.

Radio stack boundaries

The adapter uses host drivers plus firmware running on the radio. Windows Bluetooth services manage discovery and profiles, while companion applications may add proprietary behavior. Congestion, sleep transitions, and stale keys present differently across these layers.
