
Network Adapter Will Not Start: Safe Troubleshooting
A network adapter that will not start usually points to a driver, power-state, or resource conflict. Work through the checks from least to most invasive.
When Windows reports that a network adapter cannot start, a driver hiccup, a stuck power state, or a resource conflict is usually behind it—not dead hardware. Rather than jumping straight to drastic measures, work from the gentlest checks upward and stop the moment your connection returns. Start with a proper shutdown and end with the heavier resets only if you must. This ordered approach protects your settings and often restores the adapter within the first couple of steps.

Restart and drain residual power
Begin with the easiest check, which clears a surprising number of adapter startup failures. Shut the PC down fully rather than just restarting. On a laptop, unplug the charger and, if the battery is removable, take it out; hold the power button for about thirty seconds to drain leftover charge, then reassemble and boot. On a desktop, switch off the power supply at the back and hold the power button briefly before turning it back on. This clears a stuck hardware state that a normal reboot leaves in place. Check whether the adapter starts normally before doing anything more.

Reinstall the network driver
If the error survives a power drain, refresh the driver. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager, then expand Network adapters. Right-click the adapter flagged with the warning and choose Uninstall device. Leave the box that offers to delete the driver software unchecked for now, confirm, then restart the PC. Windows reinstalls a working driver on boot in most cases. If your Wi-Fi is down and this is your only adapter, download the correct driver ahead of time from your PC or motherboard maker's official support page using another device, and copy it over on a USB stick before uninstalling.

Roll back or update the driver deliberately
Sometimes a recent driver change prevents the adapter from starting. In Device Manager, double-click the adapter and open the Driver tab. If the "Roll Back Driver" button is available, the failure may have started after an update, so roll back and restart. If rollback is greyed out, try "Update Driver" and let Windows search, or install a fresh copy from the hardware maker's official support page. Avoid third-party driver download sites, since a mismatched package can make things worse. Match the driver to your exact adapter model and Windows version, then restart and recheck the adapter's status.

Run the built-in network reset
Still stuck? Let Windows rebuild the networking stack. Open Settings, go to Network & internet, then Advanced network settings, and choose Network reset. This removes and reinstalls your network adapters and returns their settings to defaults. Confirm and let the PC restart. Be aware it forgets saved Wi-Fi passwords and any custom VPN or proxy settings, so have your Wi-Fi password ready before you start. Network reset is more thorough than a simple driver reinstall because it clears configuration problems too, which often resolves a resource conflict that was blocking the adapter from starting.

Reset Winsock and the TCP/IP stack
If a network reset didn't stick, reset the underlying networking components by hand. Click Start, type "cmd," right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. Run "netsh winsock reset" and press Enter, then "netsh int ip reset" and Enter. These commands repair corrupted network settings that can leave an adapter unable to start. Restart the PC afterward so the changes take hold. This is a targeted, well-established fix rather than a risky one, but it does clear custom network tweaks, so only use it once the simpler steps above have failed to bring the adapter back.

Check Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor for clues
When the error persists, look for what's really happening. Type "Event Viewer" into Start and browse Windows Logs, then System, filtering for errors around the time the adapter fails. Messages mentioning the adapter, a driver, or a resource conflict point you toward the cause. Also open Reliability Monitor by typing "reliability" into Start; its timeline shows whether the trouble began right after a Windows update or a new program. These tools won't fix the issue directly, but they tell you whether to suspect a specific update, a driver, or a deeper hardware fault.

Try last-resort measures
If nothing above works, move to heavier options carefully. Check your PC or motherboard maker's official support page for a BIOS or chipset update, since firmware occasionally fixes adapter resource conflicts; follow the maker's instructions exactly, because a bad BIOS flash is risky. You can also disable and re-enable the adapter in the BIOS setup screen, or test with a USB network adapter to confirm the built-in one has truly failed. When a USB adapter works normally but the internal one still cannot start after every check, the built-in hardware is likely the culprit.
